What this tool does
Base64 turns arbitrary bytes into a text-safe alphabet, which is why it appears in data URLs, email attachments and JWT segments. This encoder uses UTF-8 and can switch to the URL-safe alphabet, replacing + and / with - and _, so the value survives URLs and filenames.
How to use it
- Choose encode or decode.
- Paste the text and toggle URL-safe if needed.
- Copy the result or swap it back into the input.
Questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. It is reversible encoding, not protection. Anyone can decode it; use real encryption for secrets.
Why do emoji work?
Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding, so multi-byte characters round-trip correctly.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It swaps + and / for - and _, and often drops padding, so the string can be used in URLs without escaping.
